CONGRESSMEMBER HARLEY ROUDA STATEMENT ON DEMOCRATS’ WORK TO END THE TRUMP SHUTDOWN

Washington D.C. – Today, Congressmember Harley Rouda (CA-48) issued the following statement on the Democratic House Majority’s legislative actions to reopen the Federal Government.

"With so much important work to do on behalf of the American people, it's basic common sense - let alone responsible and principled leadership - to make sure that our government is open and operating at full capacity.  In the name of putting people and progress over partisan politics, the new Democratic House is moving at speed to reopen government services, ensure workers get their paychecks and restore certainty to the lives of the American people."

"The two-week Trump shutdown has been holding the health and safety of the American people ransom over the frankly ludicrous idea that building a wall on our southern border will make us safer.  The fact is that my fellow Democrats and I are champions of real border and port security by committing  to using today’s most innovative technologies rather than the folly of the President’s continued demand that we waste taxpayers dollars on medieval walls.  Democrats - time and time again - have voted for historic increases in funding for border security.  It’s Donald Trump who is putting our nation’s safety at risk by shuttering the Department of Homeland Security through his childish behavior."

"Actions speak louder than the empty rhetoric and temper tantrums of the President.  And, today, Democrats are set to act.  The bills the new Democratic Majority are putting on the House floor will end this sadly manufactured crisis of government.  These bills, which are virtually identical to the ones the Senate just passed two weeks ago by almost unanimous consent, have wide-spread bipartisan support.  It is time for the President to do the People’s will and let our government reopen for business. That is what the American people want and that is what they deserve."
