Congressman Harley Rouda’s statement on John Wayne Airport expansion vote

June 25, 2019
Press Release

Washington, D.C. - Representative Harley Rouda (CA-48) issued the following statement:

As your representative in Congress, I have taken your concerns about John Wayne Airport (JWA) expansion and noise/air pollution directly to federal stakeholders and JWA officials. In Congress, I have co-led Congressional letters to the Government Accountability Office (GAO) requesting detailed information about how the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) measures aircraft noise, introduced an amendment to stop the "uberization" of JWA, and regularly communicated constituent concerns to the FAA and the Congressional Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure.

My office does not have direct jurisdiction over the General Aviation Improvement Program (GAIP) debated and discussed at today's Board of Supervisors Meeting. However, I am dismayed that our local elected leaders chose to take up the same proposal from May 6, without considering alternatives put forth by their colleagues. It is very clear - this issue is of the utmost importance to families and residents living near the flight path. We need community engagement to address this issue, and it was my sincere hope that the Board of Supervisors would delay this vote until a community-supported solution was found.

JWA expansion is a complex issue materially impacting our community. As your Congressman, I will continue to do everything I can to engage our community in hopes of finding an appropriate resolution, and I hope the Board of Supervisors will join me in that fight.
