Congressman Harley Rouda’s statement emergency border funding bill and conditions at migrant detention camps

Press Release

Washington, D.C. – Representative Harley Rouda (CA-48) issued the following statement:

Reports of deteriorating conditions at migrant detention camps show an administration plainly at odds with our nation’s values and aspirations. By implementing a policy of separating families and detaining children without adequate food, sanitation, or supervision, the administration believes that it can deter further immigration with cruelty and inhumanity.

Congress must forcefully reject these policies and provide humanitarian care to children. For that reason, I voted for the emergency funding bill addressing the humanitarian crisis at the border. The bill at least provides the resources to improve the conditions of children in government custody. But it is not enough. These events are symptoms of a deeply broken immigration system. They are symptoms of Central American states in crisis, from which migrants will stop at nothing to escape. Bipartisan, comprehensive immigration reform would have ensured that these children never suffered through these shameful events, and it must continue to be our end goal.

I agree with my Republican colleagues in the House and Senate that Congress must provide Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) with the technology and manpower it needs to fight the illegal drug trade, human trafficking, and threats to our national security. I look forward to working with them to ensure that the final emergency supplemental funding package provides the resources agents need to do their jobs, and addresses the humanitarian crisis while we seek comprehensive immigration reform.
